A Rapidly Ageing Population—And a Tech Opportunity

Australia’s population is ageing quickly. As of 30 June 2024, around 4.2 million people (16% of the nation) were aged 65 or over, and this proportion is projected to keep rising. While many older Australians want to remain in their homes, they require technology and support to do so safely.

The good news: older adults are more open to technology than stereotypes suggest. An AARP/Consumer Technology Association survey (2024) found that 70% of adults aged 50+ feel comfortable using technology to help them age at home. However, there remains a gap between interest and ownership: fewer than half own any AgeTech devices, and only 3% own a connected medical alert device, despite another 18% expressing interest.
Barriers remain—cost (60%) and reliability (41%) were cited most often. Additionally, 64% of older adults believe technology today is not designed with their age in mind, showing the need for tailored, user-friendly systems.
Still, the benefits are undeniable. A 2025 University of Michigan national poll found that 96% of adults aged 50+ using AI-powered home security devices (such as smart locks, cameras, and alarms) said these systems help them live independently and safely.
Likewise, 80% said the same about AI-powered voice assistants. Among seniors using AI home security, 56% rated them “very beneficial” and 41% “somewhat beneficial.” Clearly, seniors see smart home technology not as a luxury but as a lifeline.
